Following the Supreme Court decision for same-sex marriage, social media blew up with rainbow images in support for their decision. One person spoke out because he was offended by all the people he felt were jumping on the band wagon and stealing the thunder from the LGBT community. In his eyes, the rainbow symbolizes the LGBT struggle for social acceptance. As a Christian, all I could see was the hypocrisy. The rainbow was not created to represent diversity. God created the rainbow to represent His everlasting covenant with man. The real hijacking of the rainbow came from the LGBT community adopting this godly symbol for their social agenda.
One of Satan’s greatest attempts to rip off God is the misuse of His rainbow. From the beginning, Satan has wanted to ascend above the throne of God (Isaiah 14:13). In his pride and envy, he was not content to be a beautiful creation of God. He wanted to be greater than God, so after he was cast down to the earth (Revelation 12:9), he sought to use man to accomplish his goal. In his attempt to be greater than God, he constantly emulates the things of God. He uses the things of God for his sinful pursuits.
The first rainbow was a sign from God of the covenant He made with Noah, and with all men. After God had destroyed the earth with the great flood, He made a covenant with Noah and his family; He would never again flood the earth to destroy men:
Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth” (Genesis 9:1-11).
God was not sorry He had sent the flood and all His creation was destroyed with the exception of Noah, his family and the selected animals. He did what He had to do to eliminate the sin that had permeated the world: The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence (Genesis 6:11). He actually gave people 120 years to repent. That is how long it took Noah to build the ark and load the animals.
After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah and his family. He promised not to ever flood the earth again. As a sign of His covenant, God set a rainbow in the cloud:
And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth” (Genesis 9:12-13).
Not only did God set a rainbow in the cloud as a sign to Noah, but He promised the rainbow as a reminder of His covenant between Him and man. It would be a reminder to us and a reminder to Him of His everlasting covenant with us:
“It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth” (Genesis 9:14-17).
This is the reason for the rainbow. It is not a symbol of diversity. It is a sign of God’s covenant with man. It is a reminder to God and to man that He promised to never destroy the earth with a flood again.
This is the truth, found in God’s Word, but God’s sign of His everlasting covenant with man has been hijacked by Satan. Today, when people see the rainbow, they think of diversity and gay rights, not God’s promise.
Every Christian has God’s truth. There is no reason this incredible sign from the Lord should be used to symbolize something diametrically in opposition to God’s Word. We need to get God’s Word out. People need to know what the rainbow stands for. More importantly, people need to know the promises of God. Instead of throwing up our hands in surrender, every time we see a rainbow flag, we should claim the promise of God and shout it out for the world to hear. If Christians around the world reclaim God’s rainbow, one day, when God sets His rainbow in the cloud, society will see it and recognize the promise of God.
